Vintage brand and contemporary identity; The case of CHERIGAN PARIS

In WWD of August 25th 2023, in an article named Heritage Fragrance Brands Are à la Mode Jennifer Weill wrote “Today, Old is the new cool for fragrance. As with music and fashion, perfume consumers are increasingly syncing with past creations. “There is a shift,” said Lucie Greene, founder and chief executive officer of trend forecasting consultancy Light Years, who noted numerous drivers. “In hospitality, you’re seeing very much a return to the grande dame hotels, the revival of these sumptuous historic hotels with Belle Époque and 1930s references.” Is it because “before was better”? Is there an opposition between the vintage/historical brands vs contemporary/new houses ? Why such a strong trend in the market even for Gen z customers ? In an everchanging landscape for niche fragrance brands, with increasingly expensive products and “more of the same” marketing descriptions, customers tend to rely on proven and preexisting houses and products. But being born almost 100 years ago is not enough. The key for success is in building a real bridge between then and now, providing honest and over-the-top products and sticking to a coherent business, marketing and product strategy including contemporary features that naturally belong to your brand.
We will see how the relaunch process of CHERIGAN PARIS, originally born in 1929, relies on these key pillars in order to make the house a success in an ever overcrowded market.
